Hair Directory celebrates its 30th birthday
On 16th December 1992 hair salon, Hair Directory opened its doors for the first time in Inverness. The salon started its life in a small unit in a residential area with two stylists and two trainees, now it’s located in the prestigious Harbour Road in Inverness and employs six stylists, four trainees, a salon receptionist and a salon manager.
Hair Directory was born out of a passion for the industry by its owner, Linda Dick. Hairdressing like many other industries has changed over the last 30 years and Hair Directory has changed and evolved with it. What has stayed the same? The passion with which the team at Hair Directory have always displayed.
Linda started her business not because she knew anything about running a business, she knew, she wanted to make a difference. Young people will always be the future of this ever-changing industry and the key is education and shared knowledge. The salon regularly receives training from award winning stylists from all over the UK which the talented team all get involved in.
Trends change like the seasons and can change several times in any year. It’s vital that the team at Hair Directory keep up to date with these so its clients can expect their consultation to include ideas about the freshest looks and colours.
Why did you decide to open your own salon?
Linda: I knew I had a growing passion for hair and wanted to share this with more than just my clients so I thought, lets open a hair salon. I knew nothing about business and as a mother of three young children I knew it wouldn’t be easy. I believed with hard work, determination and the right attitude anything was and is possible.
What challenges have you faced?
Linda: We have built a successful business which has survived for 30 years however, it wasn’t easy. Our business like all businesses endured a major recession and more recently a global pandemic. I believe our success is all down to hard work and the team’s positive attitude. I love the work I do and love it as much now if not more than I did when I started out 30 years ago.
What do you believe has made the business succeed?
Linda: Our loyal clients, past and present. The amazing team I have worked with, both now and in the past. And most importantly, I believe we would not be where we are today without the support I received from my family and friends in the past 30 years. Especially the support I received in the beginning. I had a young family and starting out in a new business is very time consuming as I am sure everyone in business will agree.
How do you switch off?
Linda: I love to spend time with my family and friends who are mostly local which means there’s always someone around. I’ve taken up yoga recently and practice daily which I absolutely love, it helps keep me grounded and gives me a great sense of peace. And, when I am not researching new trends and looks, I enjoy spending as much time with my friends and family as possible.
